The Calgary Chapter hosted a virtual public event on February 17 featuring Dr. Jayna Holroyd-Leduc, Head and Professor of the Department of Medicine at the University of Calgary. Dr. Holroyd-Leduc presented on “The Impacts of Ageism on Canadian Society,” discussing the implications of ageism on a range of health outcomes and our healthcare system. In total there were 217 registrants from across Alberta and beyond, reflecting a high level of interest in this important topic. We are pleased to announce that our second virtual public event on ageism will take place May 9. Mitzi Murray, the Executive Director of THIRD ACTion Film Festival, will present on the power of media in shaping societal and individual perceptions, emotions, and attitudes to aging through film and discussion. I have worn many hats in varied industries and it has given me an abundance of experience and a broad understanding of business. I have excelled in the hospitality industry, the corporate compliance world, academia, construction, and seniors housing. It was my time in seniors housing that was the genesis for the idea of a film festival focused on older adults. I saw firsthand the impact that Western society’s fear of aging had on older adults and their children, and knew we needed to make change. To make change, you need to educate and the best way to do that is to entertain. Being a cinephile, it was only natural to think of a film festival.” – Mitzi Murray
Through film and film-based events, THIRD ACTion Film Festival offers an entertaining and educational experience that redefines the narrative around aging to guide an age-positive cultural shift. THIRD ACTion was established in 2017 and hosted its inaugural festival in 2018. This year’s festival will take place June 10-12 during Seniors Week.
